Baptism A Biblical Study
Jack Cottrell
The Bible is far from silent on the subject of baptism. There are many clear and direct statements that appear in both its narrative and didactic sections. They are widely scattered throughout the New Testament, from the Gospels and Acts to Paul’s letters and the General Epistles. Thus, the main problem underlying modern confusion about baptism is not a dearth of biblical material, but rather a preconceived notion of theological assumptions. It is extremely difficult—some would say impossible—to be objective when attempting to interpret the Bible. We are pre-empted by what it “should really say” or what “we are not inclined to read, especially its references to baptism, with ideas of what it could certainly mean.” Fully aware of the difficulties this entails, our goal in this study is to examine key New Testament passages on the meaning of baptism as if we were hearing or seeing them for the first time. How would the original listeners of some of the key statements have understood them? How would Nicodemus have understood John 3:5? How would Peter’s audience have interpreted Acts 2:38? How would Paul have understood the matter of Ananias in Acts 2:16?
