The City of Ephesus
The word Ephesus in Greek means “desirable” or “coveted.” It was a city in the Roman province of Asia, located near the mouth of the Cayster River, three miles from the western coast of Asia Minor, opposite the island of Samos. It had an artificial harbor large enough for the largest ships, rivaling the port of Miletus, and stood at the entrance to a valley that extended far into Asia. Ephesus was connected to the main cities of the region, making it easily accessible by both sea and land. This city enjoyed several advantages:
1. Geographical Advantage:
From the above description, it is clear that the port of Ephesus was one of the greatest ports in Asia, and all the roads from Mesopotamia reached it via Colossae and Laodicea. Roads from Galatia to the sea passed through Sardis and ended in Ephesus. Goods from the Cayster, Meander, Galatia, and Mesopotamia flowed into Ephesus. Saint Ignatius called it the “Royal Road,” and it was also called the “marketplace of the vanities of the ancient world.”
2. Political Advantage:
Ephesus held the title of “free city.” Rome granted this title to certain cities that had rendered distinguished services to the Roman Empire and demonstrated their loyalty. A free city was self-governing, and Roman armies were not stationed there. Roman governors visited it from time to time and administered justice according to the renowned Roman law.
3. Religious Advantage:
Ephesus was not only important geographically and politically, but it also held a significant religious position.
