Then the heads of the families of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, along with everyone whose spirit God had stirred, rose up to go and rebuild the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. And all those around them assisted them with silver vessels, gold, goods, livestock, and precious things, besides all that was freely given.
When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests stood in their robes with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord according to the order of David king of Israel. They sang praises and thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout of praise to the Lord because the foundation of the house of the Lord had been laid. Many of the priests and Levites and heads of the fathers’ houses, the old men who had seen the first temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this temple was laid before their eyes. And many others were raising their voices with shouts of joy. The people could not distinguish the shout of joy from the sound of weeping among the people, for the people were shouting. They let out a great roar, so loud that the sound was heard from a distance.
