Biblical heroes often called themselves refugees and migrants. We, followers of Christ, share the fate of those who “reach out for a better country, a heavenly one,” and are aware that “they are strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Hebrews 11:16, 13). The life of a traveler is not easy.
First, we face the same problems as the world in which we travel. These are wars and epidemics, disasters and cataclysms, diseases and suffering, the loss of loved ones and the approach of death.
Second, we, as strangers, suffer from the world itself. We are sometimes seen as a threat, sometimes as easy prey. A stranger is always the first in line for accusations and persecution.
Third, traps await us, falling into which we risk forgetting our true purpose. We can
forget that we are here – out of place. Out of place and out of time.
Temporary guests and strangers.
“It is in vain to spread a net in the sight of a bird. These people… are setting an ambush for their own lives,” warns the wise
Solomon (Proverbs 1:17–18). Therefore, it is very important to be able to
recognize the dangers that lie in wait for us.
